皇因对他说道："我昨夜梦见张果、叶法善、罗公远三位仙师来说，我宿世是元始孔升真人，谪在人间，已经两世，今命数已终，特来接我到修真观去修行，忏悔一甲子，然后复还原位。今双鹤来降，此其时矣！"遂命具香汤沐浴，安然就寝，谕令左右勿惊动我。至次早。宫媛及诸嫔御辈，俱闻上皇睡中有嬉笑之声，骇而视之，已崩矣。正是：

    两世繁华总成梦，今朝辞世梦初醒。

    上皇既崩，肃宗正在病中，闻此凶信，又惊又悲，病势转重，不隔几时，亦即崩逝。张后意欲废太子，别立亲王。李辅国杀张后，立太子是为代宗，于是辅国愈骄横。后来辅国被人杀死，这刺客实代宗所使也。那安史辈余贼，至代宗广德年间，方行珍灭。代宗之后，尚有十三传皇帝，其间美恶之事正多，当另具别编。看官不厌絮烦，容续刊呈教。今此一书，不过说明隋炀帝与唐明皇两朝天子的前因后果，其余诸事，尚未及载。有一词为结证：

    闲阅旧史细思量，似傀儡排场。古今帐簿分明载，还看取野史铺张。或演春秋，或编汉魏，我只记隋唐。隋唐往事话来长，且莫遽求详。而今略说兴衰际，轮回转，男女猖狂。怪迹仙踪，前因后果，炀帝与明皇。（调寄"一丛花"）
